Some of the greatest beers in the world are only produced once a year and are specially brewed for the season that they are released. These beers can be crisp, light bodied, refreshing ales and lagers brewed for fun in the sun! While others are fuller flavored, higher in alcohol and have a warming quality to them, making them great for cozying up by the fire on cold winter nights. Depending on the time of year…the styles of beer for this beer sampler will change. Here is a brief description of the types of beers you can expect as the seasons change.

Summer – When the temperature rises you want a beer that is cold and refreshing. Summer beers are lighter flavored and typically lower in alcohol, making them easy drinking. Summer beers can include lightly hopped Pale Ales, German Kolsch beers, Pilsners and other light Lagers, Wheat and Weizen beers, Fruit beers, and Blonde ales.

Fall – Fall seasonal beers offer a real variety of flavors and profiles for any beer lover. If you’re a fan of German beers, Marzen and other Oktoberfest style beers are classic examples of fall beers. Other beers typical to the fall are “Harvest” beers. These range from freshly hopped ales made with whole hop cones fresh from the fields, to pumpkin and spiced beers. It’s not uncommon to see some Brown and Amber ales in this season too. This is also when we start to see the beers get a little more full flavored.

Winter – Often referred to as “Winter Warmers,” these beers almost always are designed to be full flavored and higher in alcohol. Filling you up and keeping you warm. A variety of spices and darker malts are used in the brewing of these tasty beers. You will find lots of Brown and Amber ales, Porters, Stouts, and Strong Ales in these selections. With the layers of flavor in these brews, they make a great pairing with winter and holiday food dishes.

Spring – As the cold from winter fades and life begins to come alive, so do the beers. These beers offer the widest range of styles and flavors. Traditional spring beers can include German Bock beers, but more often…spring is a season for creativity in brewers. With that in mind, you can expect anything from Pale Ales and IPA’s, to Wheat beers, to Pilsners, Stouts, and even some that fit into a style all their own.
