In the year 1970 Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, a West Virginia housewife, started a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. Through efforts on the part of businesses, churches, and political leaders, this became a statewide campaign. Senator Jennings Randolph was very involved in the project.

The very first Grandparents Day was in 1973 in West Virginia and it was proclaimed by Governor Arch Moore. In the very same year, Senator Randolph also introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the US Senate. However, the resolution was not successful in committee.

Mrs. McQuade along with her team, eventually turned to the media to gain more support. They also had started to contact senators, governors, and congressmen in every state and even sent letters to businesses, churches, and numerous national organizations who focused on senior citizens.

In 1978 the US Congress passed a legislation proclaiming that the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day, which President Jimmy Carter signed.

Today, Grandparents Day is celebrated by over a million people in the United States giving grandparents everywhere the recognition they deserve.
