Doctor's Day
Doctor's day is observed every year on March 30th, but how did it come about?
The very first Doctor's Day observance was held by the Barrow County Alliance on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician named Dr. Charles B. Almond, felt that there should be a day set aside to honor all physicians.
On the first day that this holiday was celebrated in Georgia, cards were mailed to physicians and their wives and flowers were placed on the graves of deceased doctors. The resolution to pay tribute to doctors, was adopted at the annual state meeting in Augusta, Georgia on May 10, 1934.
In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate by Congressmen Mike Parker, G. V. Montgomery, and Senator Thad Cochran in order to establish a national Doctor's Day. On October 30, 1990 that President George Bush named March 30th as "National Doctor's Day".
This holiday allows citizens of the United States to publicly show appreciation for the role of physicians play in caring for the sick, advancing medical knowledge, and of course, promoting good health. The red carnation has been a symbol of Doctor's Day for years.
